The Middle Rhine Valley in Koblenz

Middle Rhine Valley |
Embark from Koblenz on a journey back in time through the romantic Middle Rhine Valley. Romanticum is a brand-new interactive exhibition transporting visitors into the world of myths and legends enshrouding Germany's 'river of destiny'. The exhibition presents the UNESCO World Heritage Middle Rhine Valley in all its unique glory and also reveals some notable personalities who are closely associated with the Rhine, from Goethe and Heine to Queen Victoria, and the wine-growers whose vines still dominate the riverbanks. Romanticum is located within the Forum Confluentes arts centre, which is an architectural masterpiece in itself. The building also houses Koblenz's main tourist information office and the Middle Rhine Museum.

Holidays on Brandenburg's waterways

Travelling in a boat or canoe is always a guarantee for great fun. Look no further than Brandenburg. The lakes and canals of the Havelland region, Müritz and Ruppin can be explored by raft, water bicycle or even a floating holiday lodge. While the sportier adventurers might want to take to the water on unusual bikes, for me the bungalow boat represents a far more inviting and leisurely option. Guests get to pilot these floating holiday homes through one of Europe's most beautiful water sports regions.

German Grape Harvest Festival
in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse
It will be a proud moment for the local girl to be crowned Palatinate wine queen at the German Grape Harvest Festival in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. Elaborate floats, marching bands and groups in traditional costume make their way past the timber-framed houses of the old town during the vintners' parade. The grape harvest festival, alongside the Wurstmarkt wine festival in Bad Dürkheim, is a highlight of the wine season. From 4 to 14 October 2013, guests are invited to Hetzelplatz square to sample wine and sekt from Germany's 13 wine regions. One week earlier, on 27 September, the Haiselscher wine village opens, at which local wine will be served alongside Palatinate specialities such as the famous saumagen. There's also a chairoplane, a Ferris wheel and stalls to add to the funfair atmosphere.

The fourth Gourmet Half Marathon in Saarbrücken is where fitness is rewarded with fine food. Sporting and culinary achievements share centre stage at this event on 15 September 2013. In the Saarland's French year, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty of Franco-German reconciliation, there are some special gastronomic treats in store for the runners. A loop at the beginning takes participants around the city's major sights. Passing by the main train station and St. Johanner Markt square, the route carries on along the Saar and back to the State Theatre, where the start and finish lines are located. And it is here that the feasting takes place afterwards. Energy bars and isotonic drinks aside, the 2,000-plus runners can refuel on delicious treats such as mini Lyonnaise tartes flambées, wild boar salami and herb focaccia. Top chef Cliff Hämmerle, a keen runner himself, is the man behind the catering.

On the trail of Wagner in Eisenach

The Singers' Contest at Wartburg Castle is one of the most significant works in German literature. When Richard Wagner came to Eisenach and saw Wartburg Castle, it was clear to him that the singing contest in his opera Tannhäuser had to be set there. Eisenach and the surrounding Hörselberge hills with the Venus Grotto provided Wagner with both a source of relaxation and a theatrical setting. This Thuringian town has many connections with the composer, who met with Franz Liszt and the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, an admirer of his work, in the Stadtschloss. The exhibition Wagneriana, which honours the 200th anniversary of the musician's birth, is on display until 3 November 2013. An altogether different and refreshing perspective of Wagner is provided by the caricaturist F.W. Bernstein. In the exhibition F.W. Bernstein –Richard Wagner's Life and Works in Print, running in the Reuter Wagner Museum until 3 November 2013, the former professor of caricature and comics depicts the musical genius with follow composer Verdi in the garden and at the piano.
