Celebrations for Monteverdi’s 450th Anniversary of his Birth
He’s had everything from music schools and conservatories, the King's College choir in Cambridge and even an asteroid named after him. To mark the 450th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi’s birth, his hometown of Cremona has organised a festival packed with countless events all over the city as well as a calendar of evening concerts at Teatro Ponchielli. The “Monteverdi Festival” will also feature a weekend-long musical cruise on the Po, from Cremona to Mantua and finally Venice. Concerts will take place on board, at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua and at the Teatro La Fenice.

New Archaeological Re-openings in Rome and Pompeii
After six years of works, the CIRCO MASSIMO in Rome has been re-opened to the public, 600
metres in length and 140 in width the Circo Massimo has seen during the course of its history “quadriga”races, exotic animals hunts, triumphal parades and executions, graveyards and artisan’s laboratories. You can now visit also the Torre Molfetta built in the 13th century and admire an evocative panorama across Rome.
The archaeological area of the IMPERIAL FORA has also recently been fully re-opened to the public after 20 years, 16 new illustrative panels will guide the tourist along the way to illustrate their venerable history.
Also re-opened after restoration is the IMPERIAL RAMP of the Roman Forum that linked the Forum to the Imperial Palace, follow it to arrive at an unusual panoramic point on the Fora.
CASA DEI VETTII has been partially re-opened in Pompeii, after a closure lasting 9 years. The Vettii were rich “liberti” (freed slaves) dating from the 1st century DC. Graceful paintings on the walls, statues and fountains in the enclosed garden and even pots and pans in the kitchen are all testimony of the wealth of its inhabitants.
New Museum “Federico II Stupor Mundi in Jesi (Ancona)
The Museum “Federico II Stupor Mundi” will open during Spring 2017. It is aimed at celebrating Frederick II of Swabia, born in Jesi on 26th December 1194, and narrates his influence in the context of local, national and European history. The museum is dedicated to the Swabian Emperor with an Arab heart: the "Stupor Mundi" which was the grandson of Barbarossa, patron of the arts, as well as a great innovator in the field of law, politics and sciences. The premises designated to house the future museum, Palazzo Ghislieri, is located in Piazza Federico II, Jesi.

The summer residence of the Popes since the 17th century, has been opened to the public and it is now a museum. The Papal Apartments will remain just as they were when the Popes were
visiting, you can visit the Pope’s bedroom, library, study, the Swiss Guards Hall and the
Meeting Room. This is in addition to the Papal Gardens already opened two years ago.
New Football Museum in Milan
Museo del Calcio, Football Museum has been opened in the fashionable Galleria V.Emanuele in the centre of Milan. On show are more than 150 objects belonging to the most iconic names and places in football: football shirts, boots, trophies and other memorabilia. An animated itinerary will celebrate the most famous 25 players in history and a new prize “The Stringa d’oro” will be given every year to the best football passes of the season.

The Sanremo “Festival Della Canzone Italiana”

The Festival of the Italian song, also known as Festival di Sanremo, began in 1951. Nowadays it is held in the Ariston Theatre of Sanremo. It is essentially a contest in which different singers propose original songs, composed by Italian authors, which are voted by a jury and by the public. From its birth in 1973, Umbria Jazz was clearly different from the other Italian jazz festivals. While jazz was usually to be heard in small clubs and occasionally in theatres and concert halls, Umbria Jazz took the music into the historic town squares of Umbria to audiences of up to twenty thousand young people, and every concert was free. La Notte Della Taranta

La Notte della Taranta is the most important music festival in Europe dedicated to traditional music, and it collects every summer over 200.000 spectators from all over the world. The Explosion of the Cart

Tradition says that during the first Crusade of 1096 the Florentine knight Pazzo de 'Pazzi was the first manwho planted the banner of the Cross on battlements of Jerusalem and as a gift he received some fragments of the Holy Sepulchre. Upon his return to Florence the stones were used to start the Sacred Fire of Holy Saturday, and were paraded through the city as homage to it in a richly decorated chariot. Nowadays, on Easter Sunday a large wagon is pulled by white oxen in a procession in the streets of the centre of Florence to the front of the cathedral.
Festa dei Ceri (Race of the Candles)

The Festa Dei Ceri is one of the oldest Italian folklore display. The festival is an act of devotion on the part of the Eugubini towards their Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini which started in 1160, the year
of his death. Since then, every 15 May, the eve of the day of mourning, the devotional offering to the patron saint is a fixed appointment for the people of Gubbio who take part in a great mystical procession, carrying candles all around the town and up Mount Ingino (where since 11 September 1194 the body of Saint Ubaldo lies, in the church which bears his name). www.ceri.it

The Archidado Joust traces its origins back to the Middle Ages and was officially created in 1397 to celebrate the wedding of Francesco Casali, the Lord of Cortona, and Antonia Salimbeni, a noble woman from Siena. The Feast of San Ranieri, Patron Saint of Pisa, is celebrated annually on 16-17 June, when the veneration of Saint Ranieri is renewed on the streets running along the river Arno (the so-called Lungarni). Festival of the Redentore

One of the most popular events in Venice is celebrated each year on the third Sunday of July. The festival dates back to 1576, and is named after the church Redentore that was designed by Palladio on the island of Guidecca. Venice was suffering from a terrible plague, and the Republic's senate voted
to build a temple on the Guidecca Island in honour of Christ the Redeemer, and the Venetians promised to go there every year on the third Sunday of July, if the plague stopped. Traditionally, the Venetians celebrate this day by having dinner on the Saturday night while watching an incredible display of fireworks that light up the skies over Venice for an hour or more. www.veneziaunica.it
The Palio of Siena

Everyday life comes to a halt as Siena celebrates its most ancient and sacred ritual: horses and riders representing ten of Siena’s seventeen contrade, or districts, race around the ring of tufo rock in the Piazza del Campo. On 2 July and 16 August the afternoon begins in the heart of each contrada with the blessing of the horses, followed by the historical parade to the piazza. Finally, there is the race itself: the victorious contrada bears the banner triumphantly to the Provenzano Basilica for the 'te deum' or thanksgiving to the Madonna ( 2 June) or to the Madonna Assunta (16 August). www.comune.siena.it
Palio dei Normanni di Piazza Armerina

Plutia (the old Piazza Armerina) is home to ancient medieval events in Southern Italy which takes place every year from August 12-14 in honour of Madonna Maria SS. Delle Vittorie. The event is a re-enactment of Sicily being conquered in 1060 by the Normans, led by Ruggero of Altavilla. La Torta Dei Fieschi
Cogorno and Lavagna (Genoa), 13-14 August 2017
On 13th August in San Salvatore di Cogorno, the Addiu du Fantin, takes place. It's a medieval reconstruction of the bachelor party of Count Opizzo Fieschi with knights, dances, music and flag games. One following day, the August 14, in nearby Lavagna, the medieval reconstruction of the marriage of Bianca De’ Bianchi with Opizzo Fieschi takes place, it is better known as "Torta dei Fieschi" (Fieschi’s Cake): a giant wedding cake prepared for the occasion by local confectioners, is distributed to all participants in the event. www.tortadeifieschi.it

Each year the Medieval town of Viterbo in Lazio has festivities in honour of its Holy Patron. The
Trasporto della Macchina di Santa Rosa, a procession which takes place in the evening of September 3rd to commemorate the relocation of the body of Saint Rosa from the Church of Santa Maria del Poggio to the church of San Damiano (the Sanctuary of Santa Rosa). This colourful event sees 21 contestants relive the ancient tradition of the Palio in the historic centre of this charming Piedmont town, famous for its sparkling wine, the Asti spumante. In the days preceding the race, visitors can enjoy many preparatory events: the Palio of the Flagwavers, the colourful flea market, the trials of the jockeys on the field.
