Veteran broadcaster David Dimbleby                               Photo:BBC/Pete Dadds
The first episode of the new maritime series will air on BBC One this Sunday 17th November 2013. During filming, Dimbleby was given the chance to have a tattoo of his own while learning about how body art was introduced to the UK as a result of Captain Cook's exploration of Tahiti and her islands. The presenter said he decided to ‘man up’ and visit an east London tattoo parlour after discovering the Tahitian custom.
Dimbleby’s travels will see him researching the history of Tahitian tribal tattoos, which were first brought to Britain by Captain Cook’s crew in the 18th Century. Tattoos in Tahiti have great symbolic significance.
‘Tattoo’ is one of the few Polynesian words that has worked its way into the English language. The legend of Tohu, the god of tattoo, describes painting all the oceans’ fish in beautiful colours and patterns. In Polynesian culture, tattoos have long been considered signs of beauty and in earlier times were ceremoniously applied when reaching adolescence.
Set within the beautiful Pacific Ocean, Tahiti and her islands is made up of 118 diverse islands and presents the ideal mixture of culturally enriching experiences and a varied, serene landscape of turquoise lagoons, volcanic peaks, lush valleys and white sand beaches await, for the ultimate memorable trip of exploration and relaxation.
Britain and the Sea, made in partnership with the National Maritime Museum, starts on Sunday 17th November at 21:00 GMT on BBC One.
